THE RACE IS ON !
Clipper 09-10 Round the World Race
The Clipper Race is a unique challenge in which people from all walks of life have the opportunity to take part in, the only race round the world open to non-professional sailors!
Ten identical boats sponsored by different cities or countries in the world, has departed from Hull on the 13th of September to cover every ocean of the world in 7 legs. The fleet will return to Hull on the 17th July 2010.
The Facts
We will be racing on 68ft stripped down yachts with open decks, 11 sails, a coffee grinder and primary winches all very similar to the racing yachts of the Volvo Ocean Race.
With basic facilities onboard, each team has to plan victualling effectively before and during the race as there is no fridge/freezer or microwave. Food is the fuel that makes a happy crew, sufficient quantities of dried and canned food to feed 18 crew up to 5 weeks at a time.
There are 2 heads (toilets) onboard, one with a shower fitting, but we all know we will have to rely on wet wipes most of the time or wait for a tropical storm...
Who wants to take a shower when it's -5°C?!
Leg 1 Hull to Rio de Janeiro
Leg 2 Rio de Janeiro to Cape Town
Leg 3 Cape Town to South Australia
Leg 4 South Australia to Quingdao
Leg 5 Quingdao to California
Onboard Team Finland, sponsored by the Finnish Tourist Board with an amazing crew and skipper Rob McInally, I will take part in the last two legs of the race, a total of 8,000 nautical miles. I will join the team in April 2010, from California racing down to the Panama Canal, then Jamaica, New York, Cape Breton Island, accross the Atlantic to Cork, Ijmuiden in the Netherlands, to reach the finishing line in Hull-UK!
